I've been reading Simon Schama's The American Future. While his grasp of the history is, I think, masterful, I can't say I'm entirely enjoying it. The writing is rather uneven, purple passages interspersed with the odd sensation of Schama's familiar voice talking inside your head. But that's what you get with the script for a TV series which has been, in the immortal works of Monty Python, adapted for radio by banging a few nails through it.
Still, I am, in the immortal words of Benny Hill, learning all the time.
